75th

American Legion Post 147, Jasper IN sends 22 delegates to

Hoosier Boys State. Making it the Post with the most delegates and the only Post in the State of Indiana in the double digits.

We are very proud of our young men.

Also this is the first year a 66 passenger school bus was used and the first time in the recent history of Hoosier Boys State.

We also have a great set of parents who stepped up and took charge as well as raising great young men.

A Big "Thank You" goes out to all the Sponsors, who without you none of this would have been possible.

Change of orders, 151st staying home

By on June 1, 2012in News (Dubois County Free Press)

The soldiers of Indiana National Guard 1st Battalion, 151st Infantry headquartered in Jasper received mobilization orders in February, but on Wednesday the battalion learned orders had changed and they would be staying home.

Captain Michael Kloeck at the Jasper Armory/Headquarters stated the change in status didn’t come as a surprise as the draw down of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan continues.

The battalion was scheduled to leave for Camp Atterbury in July and after a few months of training, would have reported to Afghanistan to provide security for Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT). These are joint military teams that are working to repair infrastructure in the embattled country.

With the new orders the unit will return to a regular training cycle. The unit is in its fourth year of Army Force Generation (ARFORGEN) cycle. This is a training process used to manage the force and ensure the ability to support demands for Army forces.

Players begin to file into the Jasper American Legion an hour before the weekly Wednesday night bingo games start.

They head to the back of the playing hall to a table to purchase their night’s worth of bingo sheets, walking around one side of an L-shaped group of tables.

Bingo workers sell them sheets for various bingo games, tickets for drawings held in the middle of the evening, and ink-filled daubers used to mark called numbers on their bingo sheets.

Sisters Sally Rees, Lou Schitter and Annie Messier are a familiar sight at the weekly games. They’re stationed on the receiving side of the table, exchanging money for bingo sheets and chit for chat.

They catch up on the lives of the regular players, like Bretzville resident Rita Bachman, whose husband brings her to the games. Rita approaches Annie to show her the new earrings she’s wearing.

“Oh, those are pretty,” Annie says as she takes Rita’s money for special bingo sheets called quickies.

“My honey bought them for me,” Rita says proudly. For more, article continues  here
